A Centre for Community-Driven Response in health

world federation for primary care & community nursing

With its headquarters in Geneva amongst global health initiatives and international organisations, the vision of the federation is to be a mechanism for strengthening primary and community care through nursing

• Leverage the position of primary and community care nurses to support social justice, equity and access to health care and adherence to treatments
• Health system strengthening in primary care led by the nursing profession
• Progress evidence-based practice through learning and collaborative research with a focus on capacity building
• Support access to diagnostics and treatments, adherence, and uptake of existing public health initiatives and services
National associations for primary and community care nurses exist in different forms in Australia, Brazil, Canada, New Zealand, United Kingdom and United States of America.

There is a clear gap in both national bodies and the existence of a global federation.

In some countries, primary care nurses’ associations may not exist because there are few primary care nurses, the terms primary care nurse is not familiar, community nurses lead clinics, and/or health extension workers are in place within communities where nurses are not available.
In these cases, there may be opportunities to engage national nursing colleges/associations who have a chapter for primary care or, use this as a platform for national nursing colleges/associations to establish primary care chapters.

Program of work

The inaugural program of work requires prioritising initiatives that align with global healthcare challenges, emphasising education, advocacy, collaboration, and systems strengthening. Below is a draft program of work to be discussed and endorsed by the inaugural executive committee and is dependent on funding. The inaugural executive committee will comprise primary care nurses associations (or equivalent national body) and heads of university nursing departments. There will also be partnership streams with international organisations, philanthropic entities/foundations, private sector partners and patient organisation networks.
